Numerous ongoing studies in The Small lab have led to the development of diagnostic tools for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of age-related memory loss. Projects target a range of risk factors and populations, including traumatic brain injury in retired athletes and military personnel, as well as brain imaging and genetic measures in individuals at risk for dementia. Longevity Center investigators are testing a variety of interventions—medications, foods, and physical and mental activity—that might protect brain health and delay age-related cognitive decline. These double-blind, placebo-controlled studies focus on people at risk for Alzheimer’s dementia, as well as those already experiencing symptoms.
