The DeNardo Lab seeks to understand how the organization of cortical circuits gives rise to behavior. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) contributes to many learned behaviors including fear memory retrieval, extinction, and avoidance, and is broadly connected with the limbic system, association cortices, and neuromodulatory systems. However, it is not well understood how ensembles of mPFC neurons are organized to contribute to these diverse behaviors. We use innovative genetic tools and imaging technologies to define the connectivity and function of mPFC neurons underlying adaptive behaviors, and to identify the molecular cues that wire these circuits during development.
